Description: | Death/thrash metal from USA, two full-length albums released in 1988 and 1990. Built upon the reverance of speed and brutality, INCUBUS reared it's menacing head in 1986. Founded by brothers Francis M. Howard and Moyses M. Howard, the two relocated from their homeland of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil to New Orleans, Louisiana. It wasn't long before the brothers recruited the bass skills of Scot W. Latour to form INCUBUS. By may of 1987, INCUBUS spewed forth their first demo, Supernatural Death (with Scot taking on all vocal duties). At a time when the death metal underground circuit was officially beginning to flourish, the demo was an instant ear bleeder among scene demo traders. Bludgeoning their home state with endless gigs and constant exposure, it wasn't long before INCUBUS signed to Brutal Records. Serpent Temptation, the band's debut, hit streets in 1988. Released to the rest of the world through Metal Works, the now legendary master piece made an undeniably favorable impact among the metal scene world wide. During their search for a new label to release the follow up to Serpent Temptation, Latour fled the band to pursue other interests. Bassist Mark Lavenia eventually filled the gap and Francis took over on vocals. The three bore and deafening sound of sickness. The band spent the rest of 1989 cultivating their sound to the peek of perfection and by 1990, newly formed Nuclear Blast Records added the band to their roster. Answering to the name of Beyond the Unknown, INCUBUS' second effort was another slab of musical brilliance. Picking up where the extremities left off, the record was actually recorded as a two piece at Morrisound Studios in Tampa, Florida when the band was still in need of a new bassist. Regardless of a lacking member, the record proved wholly explosive and lead to INCUBUS' first headlining European tour. The band was again well received and, obviously pumped by the surge of attention from their fans, quickly penned ten more tunes of mayhem for Nuclear Blast. Produced and mixed by Harris Johns at Discover Digital Studios in Rio De Janeiro, the record was again created by the sole musical genius of the Howard brothers with Francis taking on all guitar, bass and vocal lines and Moyses concentrating on the drums. (Note: Luiz Carlos had already been recruited to the line up but was unable to learn all guitar parts in time for the recording). The outcome was nothing short of sheer metal brilliance INCUBUS has become known for. During the recording session, the band joined forces with bassist Andre Luiz Oliveira thus completing the line up. Changing their name to OPPROBRIUM due to US pop-rock band of the same name, the band is set to ravage through 2000. Feeling a new name gives them a fresh jolt into the new millennium, the band's latest Nuclear Blast creation answers to the name of Discerning Forces. Holding true to the foundation the band has set from their very inception, the record is a collection of ten crushing tunes to shred the soul. With Francis experimenting with a slightly more brutal vocal range and subtly melodic riffs, each song proves to be both malicious and breathtaking. Taking their song structures to a more mature level, Discerning Forces is the album that is sure to bring death metal fans world wide to their knees in bestial delight. The band never actually 'broke up' but remained inactive after 'Discerning Forces'. They are currently writing material for a yet untitled 4th album. 1988 Serpent Temptation 1990 Beyond The Unknown Serpent Temptation review: Incubus is in all probability one of the first wave of extreme metal bands in the 80s who were responsible in influencing numerous bands who innovated the death metal genre. Now don't be surprise if you might not get as many information about the band if you don't do your own deep research, as they have flew off the radar of most fans of the genre these days due to the lack of exposure. If in some way you have heard about the band, or even got a hold of their materials, then you already know that these fellas are top-notch talents from the old days that are way ahead of their time. Serpent Temptation is the debut record from these Louisiana-based (originally from the thrash Valhalla of Brazil) death/thrash metal maniacs, and it is an album that contains 8 murky, hasty, and one of the most fervent death/thrash metal tunes ever recorded in the history of the genre. Every bit of the songs in here are catchy and memorable. Each track carries killer lightning speed and beefy thrashy riffs,a unique vocal approach (as Scott's technique appears shouted, but at the same time growled), and flat out blazing drumming. One of the highlights that is extremely noticeable in Serpent Temptation is the very well structured and very tight rendered guitar riffings. Each one of the songs has a level on elaborateness in them that gives them their own way of catching the audiences ears. When Francis (the band's axeman) plays at slower tempos, he can materialize with some of the heaviest riffs plausible, and simultaneously, the fella can instantly shift to frantic supersonic tremolo riffing at a moment's notice. But it is the drum work in all of the tracks in here that holds the true stupefaction of the record. Moyses (the band's drummer) displayed a very unique style of producing the blast in this album. The method that he used here is very conventional to the thrash metal genre. The thing is, the drummer slugs the drums like the usual technique that thrash drummers does it, but the dude does it so fast in a lightning speed tempo that it could match a full blast beat style used in the death metal domain. The raw and dirty production of the album also complements the content and intensity of the whole output of the band. The evilness and cruel atmosphere of the unprocessed style of mixing and presentation really brings out the real grandeur of this offering. I also love the art work of the album, as they kept it plain and simple, yet it instantly reveals to the listeners and the fans the horrors that is upon them once they give the record a spin. Altogether, this debut studio record is an utterly superlative classic masterpiece. This chef-d'œuvre of an album should be respected as such the connoisseurs of the death metal and thrash metal genre respects the early albums of old Sepultura, Death, early Kreator, Morbid Angel, and Dark Angel. I highly recommend this magnum opus to all fans of the mentioned genre and those who collect gems from the old days of the extreme metal music archives. Beyond The Unknown review: This album was originally released under the band name of Incubus in 1990. It is their follow up to the 1988 debut Serpent Temptation. In my opinion Beyond the Unknown incorporates more of a death metal sound than their debut while still having some thrash influences present. Many of the guitar riffs on here are extremely fast and somewhat intricate as well as very technical at times. But most importantly they are quite memorable. The lead work on here measures up to the same standard of being fast, intricate, technically masterful, and unforgettable. The drumming is very tight and compliments the often speedy guitar riffs. The drummer keeps time very well with these speed laden rhythms. Also, there are a lot of skillful tempo changes throughout the album. Most of the songs go from chaotically fast yet precise guitaring to chunky mid-paced rhythms and successfully transition from one to another very smoothly. The vocals are a nice median between thrash shouts and grunted death metal growls which suits the music quite well since the style is a hybrid of death and thrash metal. My favorite songs on here are the title track, Freezing Torment, and Mortify. Also, the song Massacre of the Unborn takes a strong moral stance against abortion and in my opinion is a pro-life anthem for the death metal genre. The production is very clean, loud, and nearly flawless. The guitar tone is very crisp and comes through the speakers more clearly than most any death/thrash release from 1990. However, the bass kind of gets buried in the mix. This is a must have for people who like old school death metal with some thrash thrown into the mix. It would be nearly impossible for fans of this subgenre to be at all disappointed with this somehow underrated death/thrash masterpiece.
